Strategy

💡C2 open cloze tests sophisticated grammar: inversion, subjunctive, ellipsis, cleft structures, and advanced connectors.

💡Some answers are content words (nouns/adjectives) in fixed phrases. Don't assume every answer is a grammar word.

Common Mistakes

⚠️Read the full paragraph, not just the sentence. Discourse-level coherence often determines the answer.

⚠️At C2, "obvious" answers can be traps. Double-check that the word fits the precise grammatical slot.

Time

⏱️About 10–12 minutes. The difficulty is higher, so budget slightly more time.

Part 3 Word Formation

Read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line.

Tips▾

Strategy

💡Expect rare and complex transformations: double prefixes, uncommon suffixes, and internal vowel changes.

💡Some prompt words require a derivation from a different word class entirely (e.g. verb → abstract noun of a different root).

Common Mistakes

⚠️Spelling is critical and there are no half marks. Practise writing out difficult words by hand.

⚠️Don't assume the most common derivative is correct. Read the sentence carefully — a less obvious form may be needed.

⏱️About 10–12 minutes. If unsure, write your best attempt and move on.

Part 4 Key Word Transformations

Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first, using the word given. Do not change the word given.

Tips▾

Strategy

💡C2 transformations test the full range: idioms, advanced passives, subjunctive, complex inversion, and cleft sentences.

💡The key word may be part of an idiom or fixed expression. Think laterally — what phrase uses this word?

Common Mistakes

⚠️You need between 3 and 8 words at C2. Longer answers are expected — don't try to be too concise.

⚠️Both sentences must convey identical meaning including emphasis, attitude, and implied meaning.

⏱️Allow 15–18 minutes. This part carries the most marks per question, so invest the time.
