💡Pay attention to dependent prepositions and phrasal verbs — these are heavily tested at this level.

Common Mistakes

⚠️Beware of options that are grammatically correct but don't collocate naturally with the surrounding words.

⚠️Read beyond the immediate gap. Sometimes the answer depends on a word later in the sentence or paragraph.

⏱️About 8–10 minutes. Trust your instinct on collocations — if it sounds right, it probably is.

Read the text and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap.

Strategy

💡C1 open cloze often tests advanced grammar: relative clauses, participle clauses, inversion, and complex connectors.

💡Some answers are content words in fixed phrases. Don't assume every answer is a grammar word.

Common Mistakes

⚠️Read the full paragraph, not just the sentence. Discourse-level coherence often determines the answer.

⚠️Watch for "obvious" answers that don't quite fit the grammatical slot — C1 tests precision.

⏱️About 10–12 minutes. The difficulty is higher than B2, so budget accordingly.

Part 3 Word Formation

Read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line.

Tips▾

Strategy

💡Expect more complex transformations at C1: double changes (prefix + suffix), internal spelling changes, and less common derivations.

💡Consider whether the sentence needs a positive or negative meaning — negative prefixes (un-, in-, dis-, mis-) are commonly tested.

Common Mistakes

⚠️Spelling is critical. At C1, you're expected to know tricky forms like "accommodation", "occurrence", "consciousness".

⚠️Don't assume the most common form is correct. Read the sentence — a less obvious derivative may be needed.

Part 4 Key Word Transformations

Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first, using the word given. Do not change the word given.

Strategy

💡C1 transformations test advanced structures: cleft sentences, mixed conditionals, advanced passives, and idiomatic expressions.

💡The key word may be part of a fixed phrase or idiom. Think laterally — what expression uses this word?

Common Mistakes

⚠️You need between 3 and 6 words. Both sentences must convey identical meaning, including emphasis and attitude.

⚠️Don't just rearrange the words. The transformation usually requires a structural change (e.g. active → passive, direct → reported).

⏱️Allow 15 minutes. Each question carries 2 marks (1 for each half), so partial credit is possible.
