Prepositions of movement describe direction and path — where something is going, not where it is. They pair with movement verbs: walk, run, drive, jump, get, go, come, fly, swim, climb.

Position vs movement — the most important distinction:
In / on / at = where something is (static). "The cat is in the box."
Into / onto = movement towards that position. "The cat jumped into the box."
This is the most common error — using in when you mean into.

Through vs across — both mean from one side to the other. Through = enclosed space (a tunnel, a forest, a crowd). Across = open flat surface (a lake, a road, a field).

Transport fixed expressions: get on / get off = public transport (bus, train, plane, bike). Get into / get out of = private vehicles (car, taxi). These are fixed — get in the bus sounds wrong.

Along = following the length of something: a road, a river, a corridor, a beach. "We walked along the river."

Past = movement beyond a point without stopping. Common in directions: "Go past the church and turn left." — turn left / right, no preposition needed with turn.
